The new aide-de-camp (ADC) to the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is Colonel Isaac Amponsah. He takes over for Major General Bismark Onwona, who held the position between January 2017 and January 2023.
Following his promotion to Major General, Bismark Onwona, the former ADC, resigned. He will now be in charge of the Ghana Armed Forces’ Training and Doctrine Command.
Prior to his new position, Colonel Isaac Amponsah taught at the Military Training Academy.
He also worked for the Armed Forces’ Defence Intelligence Unit. He assumes his new position as ADC to the president after leaving the general headquarters where he previously worked.
Colonel Isaac Amponsah, the president’s new aide-de-camp, was born in Kumasi, Ghana, on November 12, 1970. He has two children from his marriage.
Service Record
Colonel Amponsah has worked in the military in a variety of roles. Among the roles he has played are: Director of Operational Intelligence at the Department of Defense’s Intelligence, General Headquarters of the Ghanaian Armed Forces, and Command Operations Officer at the Southern Command of the Ghanaian Army are all positions.
Others include Akyem Achiase, Deputy Director Army Operations at Ghana Army Headquarters, Deputy Command Operations Officer at Northern Command, Military Assistant to the ECOWAS Special Envoy to Liberia, Course Commander/Acting Chief Training Officer at Ghana Military Academy, Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Chief of the Defence Staff at Ghana Armed Forces, Instructor/General Staff Officer III at Jungle Warfare School, and Platoon Commander at Operation GONGGONG.
PeacekeepingÂ
Colonel Amponsah has held positions as a Planning Officer and a Military Liaison Officer at the United Nations Secretariat in New York, both in the field of peacekeeping.
Additionally, he held positions as the Force Provost Marshal for UNOCI (Côte d’Ivoire), the Deputy Commanding Officer/Chief Operations Officer for the Ghana Battalion of MONUSCO (DR Congo), the Military Liaison Officer for UNIOSIL (Sierra Leone), the Administrative Officer for UNIFIL (Lebanon), and the Platoon Commander for UNIFIL (Lebanon).
Academic Qualifications
In terms of civil qualifications, Colonel Amponsah holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Geography and Sociology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, as well as a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the University of Ghana (LECIAD).
Colonel Amponsah has a Master of Arts in Strategic Security Studies with a Distinction from the College of International Security Affairs at National Defence University in Washington, DC, USA.
He also has military training and has a certificate in the Joint Campaign Planning and Integrated Peace Support Operations (IPSO) Course from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
He also holds certificates from Cranfield University and the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) in defense management and conflict and crisis management.
Colonel Isaac Amponsah speaks many languages. He is proficient in Akan, French, and English, and he enjoys going to the gym, swimming, reading, listening to music, and reading about the world.
