To protect the public, the Bolgatanga High Court in the Upper East Region has remanded four suspects in the Talensi District to police custody for the alleged murder of two people on witchcraft charges.
Together with three others, the four were arrested after two people suspected of witchcraft tragically died after drinking potions meant to prove their innocence.
The court released three of the individuals charged with aiding the trial by ordeal, but remanded the remaining four, including the witch doctor, to the custody of the police.
Tahiru Nambe, the primary attorney for the seven accused, stated that the four were not granted bail due to their “direct links” to the murder.
The lawyer said that starting the trial before the investigation into the witch doctor’s involvement was complete was premature.
“Where the witch doctor is implicated, it is premature because the prosecution says investigations are ongoing,” the lawyer stated.
